Professional Experience
For many years, most of my creative energy has gone into the series of color abstract photographs for which I am most known. Recently, in addition to this series, I have also been experimenting with a variety of media and ideas.
In 1999, I traveled to China and took a series of photographs I have been printing. They are intimate portraits of a small neighborhood in Beijing. These very small, black and white prints give the viewer an insight into the life of an average Chinese citizen.
In the fall of 2000, I took part in an exhibit, "The Immediate and the Intimate". For this exhibit, I produced a still life painting in oil 5 by 7 feet and a drawing 5 by 7 inches. This large painting was the beginning of a series of oil paintings of figure and still life. This series is an exploration of the everyday moment lost to the passage of time and is very active and emotional in my mind.
In a related series, I have revisited an old idea pertaining to the small, private moments in life. I have started this series by collecting digital images of myself at awkward, in-between moments like waking up, eating breakfast and walking down the stairs. These are moments not meant to be beautiful, but are the moments at which we are very human.
Over the years, I have missed working in 3 dimensions. In the last few months, I have produced a series of small, hand-built ceramic pots. They are bisque fired, then sawdust fired and some are embellished with fake gold leaf, wire, string, etc. These pieces are an overt representation of the wounds we all bear.
Each of these series has developed its own voice and is complete enough to considered a body of work.
